Digital continuity: Koller relies on Lamello and Borm

The traditional Swiss company Koller is celebrating its 75th anniversary. The company has long been synonymous with high-quality kitchens and custom-made interior fittings -- something immediately evident to anyone who enters its modern production facility. With more than 40 employees, including seven apprentices, it is a place where genuine craftsmanship meets forward-looking high-tech solutions. The key to its success lies in its consistent end-to-end production, from the initial customer design to efficient on-site assembly. At the heart of it all are the Lamello P-System and the software solutions of the Borm Group.

From design directly to the machine

"Since we've been engaged in end-to-end planning and production, Clamex has taken on a whole new significance for us," explains AVOR project manager and member of the management board, Kari Auf der Maur, who has been with the company for 36 years. The process starts in the CAD program Pointline. This not only creates a photorealistic visualisation, which the customer can use to create an accurate image of their prospective furniture, but also generates the finished working drawing right away. "We don't draw anything twice. That makes us efficient," says the AVOR project manager.

The connectors can be selected and placed in the CAD with just a few clicks. Using permanently stored parameters, such as edge distances and minimum or maximum distances, the system calculates the optimal positioning for the respective length and width of the workpieces fully automatically. Even a change of connector type, such as from Clamex P-14 to the Divario, can be parameterised in no time at all.

From the drawing, data transfer to NC-Hops is initiated via a power cable. The system analyses each component independently and generates the appropriate CNC program, which automatically controls the right tools and feeds depending on the material, whether wood composite board or solid wood. At the same time, the parts list data flows directly into Borm ERP, enabling a seamless, digital ordering process for dealers via ComNorm. "For me, Borm is the perfect all-in-one solution for the cabinet maker trade. It digitises our entire operations and makes them noticeably more efficient," emphasises Kari Auf der Maur.

Flexibility in the workshop

In the workshop, the CNC machinists transfer the data by scanning barcodes. Because the components are already perfectly prepared from the AVOR, the programming effort on the machine remains within narrow limits. Two CNC machines are used to machine the workpieces: an SCM Morbidelli M200 5-axis woodworking machine and a Homag Drillteq V-310 vertical drilling and processing machine.

"With the Morbidelli, we have the great advantage that, thanks to the slim main spindle, we can insert the profile grooves for the Clamex joints directly into the surface with the disc groove cutter without using an additional unit, even when complex compound cuts and miters are involved," explains CNC specialist Armin Auf der Maur, who has been with the company since 2019. In the NC-Hops, a specially adapted macro ensures that all P-System connectors can be machined with absolute process reliability.

Low transport volume, quick installation

Koller processes around 3,000 Clamex connectors per year and this number is increasing. The P-system is used across the board in all types of furniture and kitchen manufacturing, especially where components need to be press-fit tensioned and a fine, almost invisible look is required.

Whether the carcasses are strongly preassembled in the bench room or packed flat and sent to the construction site depends on the project. The clever connector ensures a decisive advantage on the construction site - without long drying times for glue or bulky protectors, Clamex immediately pulls the components together so they are flush and strong. This saves space during transport, protects the finished surfaces and significantly shortens the assembly time at the customer's premises.
