Nesting efficiency: Falegnameria Nicoletti chooses Lamello

An extraordinary success story from the heart of Umbria, Italy: what began in 1997 as an ambitious venture in a modest 60-square-metre workshop converted from a former chicken coop has grown into a state-of-the-art manufacturing business in Terni. Today, carpentry Nicoletti operates from premises covering more than 1,800 square metres, producing bespoke furniture and premium interior fittings. Owner Carmelo Nicoletti learned his trade from an early age while working alongside his father in Calabria and has always invested in state-of-the-art machinery and digital manufacturing processes. When it comes to creating invisible, highly efficient joints, the company has relied on Lamello's P-System ever since its launch.

The Clamex P-10: an all-round solution for joinery

"It was love at first sight. I fell in love with Clamex the very morning a sales representative introduced it to us in our workshop back in 2009", recalls Carmelo Nicoletti with a smile. Since then, the system has become an indispensable part of the company's production process. Each year, the company uses around 6,000 connectors, and this figure continues to grow steadily. More often than not, they opt for the Clamex P-10.

"We mainly purchase Clamex P-10 in industrial packs because it gives us maximum flexibility. As we frequently work with 19 mm panels, Clamex P-10 allows us to position the connector on both the left and right sides of the same upright without the grooves intersecting or interfering with one another", explains the experienced joiner. For Nicoletti, the P-System offers the perfect balance between outstanding mechanical strength and impeccable aesthetics. Once the components have been assembled, only a tiny 6 mm access hole remains, which can be concealed completely using a matching cover cap.

An efficient barcode-based nesting workflow

Carpentry Nicoletti's production is based on a modern Holz-Her Dynestic machining centre with nesting technology, complemented by a Holz-Her Evolution 7405 vertical CNC machining centre. The entire workflow is fully digitalised: projects are created digitally and sent directly to the machine. The software optimises the layout of parts on large-format panels, performs the cutting and sizing operations, and machines all the P-System grooves directly into the surface of the material. The P-System grooves along the panel edges are machined on the vertical machining centre. Each finished component leaves the machining centre with a barcoded label.
By scanning the barcode with a handheld barcode scanner, the machines, although physically separate, communicate with one another over the network in real time. This virtually eliminates errors during subsequent processes, such as panel edge banding. Nicoletti strategically combines Clamex connectors with traditional wooden dowels. "To prevent the workpiece from shifting and ensure a secure connection, we position a Clamex connector every 30 centimetres. We also position wooden dowels between the connectors. This provides the structure with even greater stability", explains Nicoletti.

Huge time savings during assembly

The system truly comes into its own during on-site assembly, whether for discerning private clients or large-scale projects such as the complete fit-out of hotels with more than 40 rooms. As the connectors are fully recessed flush within the wood, the individual components can be transported in a dismantled state, stacked neatly one on top of another. This drastically reduces transport volume and prevents protruding dowels or connectors from damaging the high-quality lacqueredsurfaces.

Clamex also proves to be an ideal solution for more complex projects, such as bespoke furniture for loft spaces with sloping ceilings and mitred cuts of 25 or 30 degrees. ''Mounting these diagonal elements with traditional systems is often awkward and time-consuming. With Clamex, however, all it takes is a simple Allen key to draw the components together and tighten the connector quickly and with perfect alignment, without the need for clamps or waiting for glue to dry", explains the owner.

For Carmelo Nicoletti, it is not simply a question of the cost of each individual connector, but of good business sense: "Anyone who focuses solely on the unit price fails to take the value of time into account. If Lamello saves one of our employees ten minutes when assembling each cabinet, the investment has already paid for itself once the hourly cost of labour on site is taken into account. For us, Lamello means exactly that: speed, flexibility in confined spaces and an exceptionally smooth assembly process.
