The power of change
As an experienced furniture designer for some of the UK's most prestigious schools, Witley Jones Furniture's Managing Director was looking for new ways to optimise both its products and production. In March 2025, Simon Downes faced his greatest challenge to date: finding a new, innovative connector that could withstand the high demands of everyday school life while also being aesthetic.
"From the outset, everything seemed to point to Lamello and its Cabineo X CNC connector."

Eliminating mistakes
"I had been considering moving away from cams and dowels forsome time. They are difficult to hide and don't look particularly elegant. But I was aware that this would represent a fundamental change for the company," says Simon. "During peak times, we process up to 800 panels a week, so we can't afford to make mistakes." As a high-volume manufacturer, who often works on large furnishing projects exceeding £ 500,000 and with tight deadlines, he had numerous questions: Where do you start if you want to integrate a new connector into production? How long will it take?
All paths lead to Lamello
"From the outset, everything seemed to point to Lamello and its Cabineo X CNC connector," Simon recalls. "A trade magazine I was reading had an article about a Homag UK showroom demonstration of the Drillteq vertical drilling machine and Lamello's CNC connectors," he explains. "Lamello seemed to fit our company very well."
I wanted to involve the entire team in this decision, and I am fortunate to have very progressive employees. But we had to check the Lamello connectors: Do they offer the aesthetics we want? Do they offer the necessary strength? Can we integrate these connectors into our production without costly delays?"
Thoroughly tested
Simon already knew that the Cabineo X worked perfectly on his new Homag Drillteq. After commissioning, his team was ready to thoroughly test the Lamello connector. "We designed two desks: one with cams and dowels and one with the Cabineo X. We cut, edged, drilled and assembled both versions, and then did our utmost to damage them. Lamello's design remained intact."
Taking stock
"While costs aren't always in the foreground, they do, of course, play an important role," says Simon. "Trying new things means worrying about spending too much money. However, the fact was that metal cams and dowels no longer worked for us - mainly for aesthetic reasons. With the Cabineo X, we were able to use even fewer connectors thanks to its higher strength - without compro-mising the stability of the furniture."
"We carried out time-controlled cycles on our Drillteq. Drilling the three required holes took seven seconds longer than milling the cam and dowel holes. With the quicker installation of Cabineo X, those seconds are compensated for."
Three months later, Simon has just placed his third order with Lamello and is well on his way to exceeding 100,000 connectors this year alone.
A perfect match
"We have been using the connectors intensively since March and have not had any complaints yet. We have also been able to rethink and develop designs that we have been producing for a long time. For example, our modular bunk beds: We make single beds for schools that can be converted into bunk beds if needed. All parts are stowed in the single bed frame. We now use Lamello connectors to set up and dismantle these beds as often as we like, as they remain strong even after long periods of use. It also makes it quick and easy to assemble bulky items such as wardrobes on site."
"Working with Lamello, Cabinet Vision and Homag during this transition was exceptionally easy. The integration of the new joints went smoothly and everyone involved supported us. We still have a long way to go, but I know that this investment will help us move the company forward. Lamello focuses on growth and further development. In this respect, we are very similar and I am excited about what the future holds for us."
