Since the beginning of Lamello's history, the pursuit of new insights, continuous improvements and system solutions has been at the heart of Lamello.

It is only through many years of practical knowledge and intensive development work together with our customers that we have been able to constantly come up with new solutions, and in so doing decisively shape the market for wood joining technology to this day. We have built up our expertise over the course of more than 60 years. This knowledge is complemented by a large dose of curiosity and a close relationship with our customers.

Our products are the result of continuous innovation and enable our customers to work more creatively, flexibly, productively and efficiently.

As an innovation leader, we always strive to overcome technological boundaries – for example through close cooperation and intensive exchange with universities of applied sciences as part of Innosuisse projects. The result is more than 300 patents and industrial property rights.

Multiple awards

It's not just our customers who believe that Lamello supplies outstanding products. Juries from a wide range of categories have also honoured our sophisticated system solutions many times over: among others, we were able to receive several Interzum Awards and numerous national innovation awards. This great recognition of our quality also serves as an incentive for us to keep pushing forward.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Lamello's original wooden biscuit has reached the renowned Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

In 2005, this groundbreaking invention was honoured in the special exhibition "The Most Humble Innovations of the 20th Century" along with other significant inventions. This recognition highlights Hermann Steiner's innovative idea, which makes work easier for carpenters worldwide to this day.

How it all started: a revolutionary success story

Hermann Steiner, founder of Lamello, invented the original wooden biscuit in 1955 and thus had a revolutionary idea.

"It was just before Christmas on an ice-cold and rainy December day in 1955. We were able to deliver a lot of carpentry work, which we made to measure at our carpenter's shop at Christmas according to special customer requests," says Hermann Steiner. "Due to the bad weather conditions, snowstorm and heavy rain, the transport posed a major challenge for us," said a former employee. "We had to concentrate all our energy and care on ensuring that none of these Christmas gifts were damaged by the heavy moisture," Hermann explained. "As I got home, my ears started to hurt a lot and I seemed to have a cold again."

Hermann recalls: "My wife gave me painkillers and I went to sleep with a soothing feeling, thinking that the stress is now over. When I awoke at midnight, it was like a dream. My thoughts didn't deal with the pain, but with a major challenge that had been on my mind for quite some time." At the time, many carpenters worked with chipboard and had great difficulty joining the individual parts. "In the fever of my cold, I suddenly saw a viable path that left me forgetting everything else. The solution was right in front of my eyes; a small cutter that cuts slots into the parts to be joined at predefined distances. This prevents the panel from being weakened, which is not the case with a continuous groove.

With this method, you always place two grooves opposite each other and fill them with the corresponding panels as a joining element," says Hermann. "My wife didn't find my idea that exciting and just thought I had a high fever and imagined strange things. However, I was already completely convinced of my idea." Hermann Steiner's innovative idea has taken an unprecedented path to many carpenters around the world. The name Lamello has become synonymous with this high-quality connection solution and has inspired many a carpenter.

With the new anchoring method of the profile groove, our customers have a decisive advantage in the assembly of connectors. It's fast and doesn't require glue or screws.

Thanks to the high recognition and popularity of the original wooden biscuit, new product lines with high customer benefits were successfully introduced to the market. On the one hand, the development of simple wooden panels into today's innovative plastic connection systems has enabled the range to be expanded with unique innovations. On the other hand, the new functions also opened up new customer groups as well as use in digital production. And what makes it even better: the plastic in combination with metal offers an immense wealth of possibilities that have long been untapped.
