We source and use the raw material wood responsibly as a renewable resource. We also take a conscious approach to the use of other materials, as our goal is to continuously reduce the environmental impact of our products and production methods through innovative technologies and efficient processes.

Raw materials: beech wood as a renewable resource from the region

For the wooden biscuits, we use beech wood (FSC) from sustainably managed forests in the vicinity of the company head office in Bubendorf. The local origin of the raw material and the associated short transport distances enable environmentally friendly production of the wooden biscuits.

Energy: heat from renewable resources

We fully cover our own heat requirements with our own sawmill for biscuit production, a connected wood chip heating system and a district heating facility. This saves us over 300 tonnes of crude oil every year. This makes our operations largely carbon neutral and helps to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions. We have been doing this for over 50 years.

Procurement: local, environmentally friendly and sustainable

For us, sustainable procurement means that the goods and services are produced in an economical, environmentally friendly, health-friendly and socially responsible manner.

Thanks to our long-standing and trusting cooperation with our suppliers, we can source more than 50% of our purchasing volume from Switzerland with goods of Swiss origin and almost 85% from Europe. This not only creates jobs, but also leads to a massive reduction in environmental impact thanks to the short transport distances.

Production: 100% made in Bubendorf

The original wooden biscuits are still produced from start to finish at the company head office in Bubendorf.

The precision assemblies of our power tools are manufactured in-house. Machines are also assembled and extensively tested.

We manufacture all our own plastic connectors in our plant in Bubendorf.

The original wooden biscuit from start to finish

1. The raw material

The Lamello panels are made from beechwood. This comes from a sustainably managed forest within 20 kilometres of the company head office in Bubendorf. Around 3,000 cubic metres of beech wood are processed every year. The local origin of the raw material and the associated short transport distances enable environmentally friendly production of the wooden biscuits.
2. Cutting and drying

Logs are turned into panels in the modern and efficient sawmill. They are then stored in a drying hall for 24 days until their moisture level is between 8–10%. In this state, the conditions are ideal for stable biscuit production.
3. Pressing

From the dried wooden panels, beech strips are cut and pressed into 4-millimetre-thin wooden biscuits using a weight of 25 tonnes. The Lamello logo and the diamond pattern are stamped into the panels. This diamond pattern makes it easier to place the wooden biscuits into the grooves and for glue to be absorbed. The pressing process is precision work: the wooden biscuits are checked for the correct thickness several times an hour.

Incidentally, Lamello AG was the first Swiss company to press solid wood.
4. Sorting

The sorting machines developed by Karl Steiner filter out defective parts using infrared cameras.

Incidentally, when developing the machine, Karl Steiner took his inspiration from postal letter sorting facilities. The prototype conveyor belts were also equipped with ski skins to help the panels to stick to them.
5. Packing and dispatch

The packing facility was developed by Karl Steiner to meet the company's precise needs. Here, the biscuits are placed in 1,000-piece boxes and then prepared for global delivery to customers.
6. Recycling

Wooden biscuits are produced from 20 percent of the raw material used. The remaining material is reused in different ways: large pieces of wood make for suitable firewood. Wood chips and shavings are sold as fuel for heating and are also used for the company's own heating system. Lamello AG operates its own wood chip heating system for all company premises. Excess energy is fed into the Bubendorf district heating system.

Energy: efficiency through modern production facilities

Every year, we invest in the renewal and expansion of our production facilities. Overall, the new machines contribute to further optimising energy consumption at Lamello through technological advances, efficiency standards and innovative solutions. This is crucial for a more sustainable and resource-efficient future.

Repair: availability of parts

We offer spare parts availability of at least 10 years for the E10 product group and 15 years for the E15 product group after the end of production. This means you can enjoy our high-quality machines for as long as possible.

Recycling: available near you

Our old appliances are recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. After their many years of use, Lamello appliances can be handed in free of charge to a public collection point, a specialist dealer or a Lamello repair service.

Energy: we are a district heating producer

We operate our own heating network with Breiten AG, which feeds the surplus energy into our district heating network and thus supplies other industrial plants in the neighbourhood as well as over 100 connected households with sustainable heat.

Production: collaboration with workshops for people with disabilities

Most of our very popular customer samples are produced by regional social institutions. In this way, we make an important contribution to society and at the same time integrate people who have no access to the primary labour market.
